As a PhD student, my weekdays are usually filled with academic responsibilities, research, and engaging discussions with fellow colleagues. Fridays, however, bring about a unique atmosphere in the office. With most of my office mates being Arabian and observing Friday as a holiday, the office transforms into a tranquil space with only a few individuals present, creating an ideal environment for introspection and personal productivity. Typically, our office accommodates around 6 to 9 people, today, only two people showed up, including myself, as most of my Arabian colleagues are away to their country for data collection or enjoying their weekly holiday.
One of my colleagues, usually accompanied by her best friend, came alone today. I asked her about her friend, and she said she would join us later. However, shortly after our conversation, she received a call from her friend, who regretfully announced that she wouldn’t be able to make it. Then, we had a pleasant chat about family, Hajj, and our work before she headed home.
With plans to visit the University of Dundee Botanic Garden after Friday mass prayer, I initially had grand plans for the day. However, I wasn’t feeling my best physically, and I decided to stay back in the office after the girl left.It turned out to be a peaceful decision. I enjoyed watching YouTube videos and spent some time journaling, finding comfort in the solitude.
Though I missed having more people around, the quiet atmosphere allowed me to focus on my work better. I played some music softly in the background particularly where my fave radio station KIS 95.1 FM plays Kis Love Machine every Friday, creating a serene environment.
Our office is usually lively and diverse, with colleagues from various cultural backgrounds. Even with fewer people today, the unique perspectives we share make our interactions meaningful and enriching.
So, while I initially planned to visit the botanic garden, I am content with the way the day unfolded. It has been a day of introspection, productivity, and appreciating the calmness of being alone in the office. As I wrap up my tasks and prepare to head home, I look forward to next where I will go to attend Durham Islamic Finance Summer School.
Enjoy your day, and have a pleasant weekend folks!
